Working in broadcast radio has certainly biased me towards audio-only Podcasting.
However, we live in a video world and we just started HD Vidcasts. I'm surprised just how much I like video and how much time it takes to produce a 5 minute show, compared to audio.
Are you a "drive-time" Podcast listener (if you listen to Podcasts at all) or do you prefer Vidcasts?
If the age-old saying is true; content is king. I still mostly listen to Podcasts in the car, but there are more and more informative Vidcasts out there.
What is your preference? Do you listen at home, on the road - or both?
Best,
Mark
Of course, I need to plug my own Podcast! NewMediaGear.com
I subscribe to a yoga podcast called Yoga Today - it's free yoga on a daily basis. When I travel I don't always have time to go to the gym or the hotel gyms might not be nice, so I leverage this one.
Currently I mainly listen to audio podcasts.. Even though i do listen at work... This allows me to be working and still listen. I find with Video podcast even though some are great you really can't do any thing else while you are watching.. Just my opinion..
I have a great GPS unit that I can upload podcasts (or any other Mp3 for that matter) into. I find it very useful as an entrepreneur when I need to learn an unfamiliar topic quickly. It also pauses the audio to feed in the driving directions. I can currently put 4gig - but there is an expansion slot as well. Its the Garmin Nuvi 660 I believe if anyone is curious.
So I would say that I'm with you Mark, I primarily only listen to podcasts in the car - and they are audio only.
I listen to podcasts exclusively. No video for me.
I load up my Shuffle and listen to them on my daily walks. TWIT, Buzz Out Loud, BusinessWeek-Cover stories, Businessweek Innovation of the Week, Cranky Geeks, MacBreak Weekly, Marketing Over Coffee, Net At Night, NPR On the Media, This Week in Media to name a few.
After being a podcast listener for a long time, some extra thoughts to offer...
If I were advising someone on whether to MAKE a video or audio podcast, I'd say video, if you have the resources. Someday video will take off and you'll be ready to fly with it. And for now, you can take the audio from the video version and create your audio version. Two forms of content from one! Awesome!
But if you choose this route, make sure in your video version you do not allude to or mention the visuals. Let them happen/play and you make sure the verbal content explains fully what is going on so the audio-only folks (me) don't have to guess. The DL.tv audio podcast does a really bad job with this, if you'd like an example.
Also, if your video version has ads, make sure you have audio-friendly ads for the audio version. The Cranky Geeks audio version does a really bad job with this, if you need an example for that, too. They play ads that just have music playing.. no words, no url... just music! I will never know what those ads are for because I will never watch the video version.
Interesting replies, all -
Thank you for the insight. I'm at a crossroads where we have the equipment to produce quality audio and/or video casts.
The major factor remains time and (lack of) an assistant.
As with any small enterprise climbing the ladder, I never expected it to be easy. The good part is that we can produce HD video as needed and time allows.
There's no doubt that video is the future, but there are still a lot of drive time listeners that (I hope) don't watch video!
