Mark's "box"

One of the few things that I dislike about Ning is that it's "My Page" function is not flexible for the individual User and so, this "box will change a lot.

I do think that it is important to note that while I am the Community Manger for Rasmussen, my views & comments do not necessarily reflect the the opinions of Rasmussen and Rasmussen Leadership.

Hint, hint, I'll be using the "blog" feature here very shortly and I want to make sure this is out in the open.

My thoughts on last week's "focus group"

I know I'm a couple days late posting about last week's "focus group", but I wanted to wait until we had some video posted and my regular job got in the way ;)

So here are my thoughts:

  • Overall, we had a total seven volunteers show up for this event and I think, they represented a good variety of the different "tech" people in central florida.

One of your Twitter posts reminded me that I had a Doterati account lying fallow so here I am. Thanks for the reminder.

Mark, why so defensive? I know it's hard to get a tone via comment, but I was really just trying to be constructive. I knew you were having a meeting coming up and I wanted to make sure I got some comments in just in case I couldn't make it.

And what am I doing right now? Getting in the conversation... Just because there's a new thing happening doesn't mean I'm going to be there on day 1... we all have our own lives, work, night jobs, relationships.

Implying that I was not here participating or that I was ignoring your invitations feels like passing of judgment.

If you thought my use of the word "spam" was similar, I'm sorry. What I mean is, the first comment on everyone's profile is just a simple "Welcome, (username)". It feels really generic and un-meditated. The same 3 people leaving comments for everyone was a bit of a turn-off. That's all I was trying to say. I know things are still getting started here, and I'm sure things will improve. I was trying to be part of the solution.

I am not trying to start up an anti-Doterati campaign here. I am very excited to attend the meeting and see what the dynamic is like in person. The ning site doesn't really communicate an attitude right now, so face time will help me (and I think a lot of folks) figure out what's really happening here.

Mark, I've got an idea for your town hall - instead of just leaving a cheesy "Welcome to Doterati" comment, why not actually read the person's blog, check out their interests, and engage them instead of just spamming all the comments and activity streams.

Also, I still don't know why they went with Ning at all. Sure, it's fast, but the decision seemed to come from Tara and Ted. Why not use Facebook? Find me someone here who doesn't have FB and use it regularly.

Mark,

No problem with Friday -- I'm also off-site with my boss. Wednesday looks great.
